Appearances are Deceiving

At the beginning of this classic story, the prince is visited by an old hag who pleads with him to give her shelter in exchange for a beautiful rose, but he refuses her request and tries to shoo her away. She tells him not to be deceived by appearances, nonetheless he dismisses her again and is shocked when she transforms into her true form, which is a beautiful enchantress.

This small part of the story has a hundred lessons within it, but I will only go into a few of them in this chapter and how they relate to my story, and most likely yours as well.

I am the queen of selfies. After all I have shared so far, does that surprise you? With all my issues, would you think I would like to take pictures of myself? Probably not, but you better believe I love it! Let me explain a common thing to you. People, especially girls, who have body issues will take tons of selfies and post them on social media. Why? They do it for the likes and affirmations. I needed to see my social media tribe react to my photos. I yearned for the likes, loves, and comments. But don’t be fooled. To successfully capture that one photo that I posted, I had to take 20-40 snapshots in order to find one that I felt semi-confident to post for the world to see. Now, not everyone who takes selfies has an eating disorder, but just because they like selfies does not mean that they love themselves or don’t have a problem.

I also have an incredible fear of the scale. That number has ruled my life in a way that no silly number should. I would cry and go into shaking fits at doctors’ offices and even avoid them until I couldn’t anymore just so I did not have to be weighed. I not only did not want to be weighed, but I also did not want to have to explain to every person every time why I didn’t want to. Basically, it all went back to the belief that I wasn’t sick enough. This feeling was even more exemplified when the nurse or doctor was super thin and fit.

I also avoid mirrors like they are my high school bully. I only look into them for a quick clothes check or to put on my makeup, focusing only where I am applying the product. I very rarely ever look at myself as a whole because when I do, the monster comes out and the hate begins.

For the Support Team:

I know that eating disorders are very confusing to understand if you do not have one; heck, they are hard to understand even when you do. However, realizing that what your loved ones are going through is very complex and many times does not make sense will help you to not become frustrated by their behavior. Remember that they are searching for what they believe will give them
